Why a Life Coach Will Never Be Your Friend

More and more people are hiring Life Coaches these days to deal with their personal and professional problems. Coaching is a booming industry with an estimated value of 2.4 billion dollars in the US alone.

Personal and Life coaching is a distinct service and differs greatly from therapy, counselling, mentoring and training. It offers a partnership with clients and takes them on a thought provoking and creative process to inspire the individual to maximise their personal and/or professional potential.

Life coaching focuses heavily on the NOW and the FUTURE. Some focus of course is given to the past to understand an individual’s self-belief system, negative thoughts and patterns of behaviour but the objective is to learn from the past and its negative impact and to adopt a ‘So What’ attitude to the past and a ‘What Now’ attitude to the future.

A great Life Coach will not be your friend during this process, there will be times when you will hear things you don’t want to hear, see things you don’t want to see and all for the greater cause of being someone you have always known you could be.

I believe everyone has the right to live their best life and the power within to achieve this. The trouble for many of us however is that we are a product of our childhood or have experienced some form of trauma that has us facing an internal battle with ourselves. For many of us, fear, anxiety, worry and a lack of self-belief rule our everyday thoughts and behaviour and far too many of us for my liking, are not reaching our maximum personal or professional potential.

Life Coaching has become so popular because of its success rate and perfect fit into our digital age. It is easily accessible online with many coaches choosing Skype to conduct sessions anywhere in the world. Coaching specifically addresses the root cause of our fear, anxiety, beliefs etc and devises a plan of action to challenge them and adopt better habits. According to Forbes there are 23 core benefits of coaching, read these and more about the importance of Life Coaching in the digital age HERE.

A great Coach will have the ability to inspire and empower the individual thus helping them conquer anything internally that is getting in the way of the them living their best life.
This of course is not going to be a process of mollycoddling to get results, a great coach will tell you the harsh truth, get you out of your comfort zone, hold you accountable and challenge your way of thinking so they can push you to be the best you can be. Unlike a friend, a coach is not going to tell you it’s OK, comfort you with a hug and a cuppa, and tell you there, there when you are upset. Instead they will ask WHY, WHY, WHY? (a lot) and many other thought provoking and challenging questions that a friend would never dare to ask. A great coach will also find a way to make this an enjoyable, proactive experience and support you wholeheartedly all at the same time.

The biggest battle we ALL face in life is with ourselves, we hold ourselves back and put limitations on our abilities. When we wake up to this and start to fight back, something magical happens. We start to listen to our true self instead of the negative self, we realise the power we have, we begin to accept and love ourselves and we allow ourselves to live the life we desire and deserve.

A Life Coach will help you win this battle because you are accountable to them as well as yourself. We tend to do more for others than we do for ourselves, so the Coach and Client relationship is a great recipe for success.
When we have limiting self-beliefs, low self-esteem and are in fear or anxious, it is highly unlikely we can move forward and be inspired to fight on our own battle. A great coach will pick up the sword you didn’t know you possessed, place it in your hand and teach you to fight your negative self and be a Warrior with your life.

A professional Life Coach should not and will not be your friend but, if you do decide to hire one and embark on an exciting journey with them to better yourself and your whole life, they will certainly be someone you will never forget and ultimately have a place in your heart forever.
